Declaration of Independence

Reading the Declaration of Independence, I began to think about what it must have been like to be alive and writing such a controversial document during those times. Imagine: you have spent your entire life living under the rule of the British Parliament and the King. But now you are writing a document that not only frees you from their rule, but creates an entirely new country and starts a Revolution. I decided to try to reflect the chaos of this moment in my piece.

To reflect this chaos, I set the text in blocks of varying widths, broke up blocks across pages and even spreads, as well as highlighting the abuses of King George III.

The text was set in Jonathan Barnbrook’s Mason, to refer to the historical aspect of the document as well as Paul Renner’s Futura, for legibility.
